Dr Kamal Kar, Chairman, CLTS Floundation was invited to the launch of COUNTDOWN (Calling Time on Neglected Tropical Diseases) in the Wolfson Building at (LSTM) on March 12, 2015.

COUNTDOWN is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and is an innovative implementation research partnership centred on the control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), especially those amendable to preventive chemotherapy.

Dr Kamal Kar helped in the planning stage of the research process and gave guidance on issues such as LSTM’s  focus in Ghana, Liberia, and Cameroon and how they can ensure that their work has an impact on policy and practice.

COUNTDOWN consortium has representation from the UK, USA and Africa, with the aim of generating knowledge about the realities of increasing the reach of NTD interventions, in different contexts.

Dr Kamal Kar participated in a panel discussion on: ‘Situating COUNTDOWN in the Wider Neglected Tropical Disease and Health System World’ which stimulated a lot of audience participation. The other panelists were: Prof David Molyneux, Senior Professorial Fellow , Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases , LSTM; Prof Moses Bockarie , Director , Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases, LSTM; Prof Alan Fenwick OBE, Director of the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) and Professor of Tropical Parasitology at Imperial College, UK; Louis W. Niessen, MD, Professor of Health Economics, LSTM; and Sally Theobald, Reader , Social Science and International Health, LSTM.
